Long Eaton United Reserves V Newmount 20/02/2008
Team Long Eaton:
Danny Graves, Cal Richards, Ben Burton, Tom Widdowson, Jim Hewson {Capt.}, Scott Downie, Kimany Gregoire, Jay Hallam, Dorian Jenas, Courtney Bonnick & Michael Buckley.

A chilly mid-week encounter saw the Long Eaton Reserves welcome cup finalist Newmount to Grange Park. After a level opening to the game, it was Newmount who had the first real opportunity to score.. They cleverly worked their way to create an opening inside the Blues area, but Graves was equal to a powerfully struck shot which he turned around the post for a corner. Buckley looked at his sharpest as he tested the away side’s keeper twice The Blues upped the tempo and looked dangerous with their lightening raids on the visitor’s goal

It was one such express attack which lead to the home side striking the opening goal. The impressive Jenas {D} collected the ball wide left inside his own half. He ran at pace at the Newmount defence before being fouled. Up popped the muscular Gregoire to take the free kick. His left wing cross skilfully picked out Burton, who rose like a tin of John West to nod passed the hapless Newmount Keeper. The Blues were now rampant and it was not long before the flying Dorian Jenas was at it again. This time his surging run at the Newmount defence saw him speed pass 2 defenders before slotting a perfectly waited pass to Courtney Boom Boom Bonnick. Bonnick controlled the ball instantly, then unleashed a Tony Yeboah esq. screamer from all of 30yards which thundered into the opposition‘s net via the underside of the bar. It truly is a serious contender to goal of the season!

Half time 2 V 0

With the Blues in total control and looking to increase their advantage in the second half, it took an almighty clanger by the referee to bring Newmount into the game. A hopeful punt down field eluded the otherwise superb Long Eaton defenders. Immediately the ever alert Blues Keeper Graves reacted to the danger. The Newmount striker thudded his effort from point blank range straight at Graves, who realising he was outside his area , allowed the ball to cannon of his chest and away to safety. With the away bench howling for handball and a red card the referee coward to their demands and removed the dumbstruck Blues Keeper { a harsher decision you will do well to find}

The enforced changes for the Blues saw the lively Buckley replaced with Academy star Danny Chambers who volunteered to deputise as a make shift goal keeper. This now gave the away side the numerical advantage, but for all of there huff and puff they could not conquer he brilliant Chambers, who put in a masterful performance.

Then the inspirational Bonnick and the injured Downie were replaced with the fresher legs of Leon Jenas and new recruit Ben Wallace. The 2 subs made an immediate impact as first Wallace raced through the Newmount defence, but his lob finished the wrong side of the post. Then Wallace rose at the far post to meet a Dorian Jenas cross, but he headed over the bar. The hard working Leon Jenas got into the action as first a left foot strike from distanced went close, before his righted free-kick just clipped the outside of the upright.

Late on Newmount finally breeched the Long Eaton resistance when an otherwise near perfect performance from Burton was spoiled as his misplaced header was collected by a Newmount attacker and after a couple of deflections the ball feel to an unmarked Newmount striker who fired into an empty net. Any hope of a share of the points for Newmount was immediately dashed, as Burton raced down the left wing, turning defenders inside and out before unleashing an unstoppable strike from the left edge of the box which flew into the top right of the goal. The Grange faithful were in raptures with yet another contender for goal of the season and for Burton’s “Crouch Robot” dance celebration

Mickleover Sports U19’s V Long Eaton United U19’s
Team: Long Eaton United Ashley Whelehan, Darryl Hawkins, Martin Roome, Daniel Kilbourne, Ben Preston Rob Mulonga, Simon Gleave, Nrdem Krasnigi, Jack Whieldon., Tom Booth & Danny Chambers{Captain} Substitutes Sam Hawkins, Brett Hayes, & Reiss Lindsay

The Blues Academy players travelled to top of the table and shield opponents, Mickleover Sports on Thursday evening. Despite the squad missing Captain Josh Watts, Vice Captain Lynton Francis, Joe Steed, Gareth Northover, Ashley Foster and long term injured Luke Britland, the boys still manage to put on a good performance against a very talented side. Mickleover had the first two chances, but their strikers failed to trouble Long Eaton stopper, Whelehan. From then on Long Eaton got into their stride and the Blues players had the home team chasing all over the pitch as they passed the ball fluently and comfortably from back to front. One particular move, which began with keeper Whelehan, saw the all of the Blue’s players involved, but they could not breech the home defence. Blue’s Skipper on the night Danny Chambers came closest to breaking the deadlock. First he rose the highest to get on the end of a Booth corner , but couldn’t get enough on it to beat the Mickleover Keeper and it was a similar result a few minutes later as Chambers got on the end of a Booth free-kick.

Half time 0 V 0

The second half saw pretty much the same, a hard fought contest which Long Eaton just about shaded, but they failed to present any of their strikers with an appropriate pass at the right time. Long Eaton’s central defenders Preston and Kilbourne coped with a lively home attack aide by the impressive Roome and Man of the match Darryl Hawkins. Midfielders Gleave and Ndricim {Totti} worked tirelessly for the cause, but it was a nearly night for them as far as their creativity was concerned. Wide men Mulonga and Whieldon were starved of any real quality possession and it was the same for strikers Booth and Chambers. Long Eaton welcomed Reiss Lindsay back as a second half substitute and he looked sharp. Sam Hawkins and Brett Hayes the remaining Blues subs, also looked energetic and both had chancees to snatch the victory for long Eaton , but were both denied.

Long Eaton manager Leigh Booth was full of praise for his team’s efforts. “If we can just have a little more quality with our final ball, then we can turn these draws into wins!” He stated. Our last two matches have been away against the top two in the Division and we could and probably should have won both. The boys have worked hard and the improvement is there for all to see. If we can continue with the improvement until the end of the season, then we can be pleased with our first attempt in this league.

Saturday 9th. February 2008 Borrowash Victoria Res. V Long Eaton United Res.
Team Long Eaton:
Daniel Graves, Callum Richards, Alex Hooley, Daniel Kilbourne, Jim Hewson {Capt.}, David Wilkinson, Kimany Gregoire, Tom Widdowson, Joe Steed, Colin Dewhurst & Tom Booth
Subs:
Mark Smith, Leon Jenas & Jason Hallam

This local derby was played in near perfect weather. The pitch had a covering of grass, but this just disguised a rutted and bobbley surface which both teams would struggle to master.

Things started poorly for the Blues keeper Graves, whose jersey of choice was a beautiful canary yellow. As the 2 teams were entering the field of battle, it was pointed out to Gravesy that the home team had changed their strip from red to yellow and therefore he was required to change his top. This had poor Gravesy incandescent with rage. Fortunately a major hissy fit was averted when the Blues stopper reluctantly poured his slender frame into his “Tangerine Dream” outfit.

The game got off to a blistering start with the action flowing from one end to the other. Gradually the Blues got on top and after 15 minutes young Tom Booth, drafted in from the Academy to try to improve the Resses goals for column, put sufficient pressure on the Vic’s Centre Half, who could only place his header in the direction of Steed. Steed stormed into the home side’s area and was duly tripped from behind. The Referee immediately awarded a spot kick, which Kimany Gregoire slammed past the Borrowash Keeper.

Long Eaton United Ladies v Arnold Town Ladies 10/02/2008
Long Eton United ladies travelled to Arnold Town this weekend and put on an inept performance. Long Eaton took the lead after 15 minutes, when a great Kirsty Gibbson on the turn cross was into the back of the net by Jodie Hancock. From the resulting restart, Arnold went straight down to the other end and only brave goal keeping from Hopewell kept Long Eaton in front.

After a period of sustained Arnold pressure and lapse defending by Robinson & Zaborowski, Let an Arnold forward into score. Then again on 32minutes more slack defending allowed the same forward to pick her spot in the Long Eaton goal.

In the second half Long Eaton pushed forward and applied some pressure on the Arnold side and from a resulting corner Gibbons equalised. From the resulting center kick Zaborowski lost the ball on the half way line, which was picked by a Arnold forward who went down the line and cut into the box after beating 3 tackles as if they were not there and put the ball in the back of the net. Arnold went 4 – 2 up when more pathetic defending gifted them with their 4th goal.

Final score 4 – 2

Kevin Hancock not having much to say this week only commented with the follow; “We made things hard for ourselves, we gave the goals away with childish mistakes”

Long Eaton United v Mickleover Sports 9/02/2008

LONG EATON:- White, Newton, McGinty, Watts, Stryzewski, McCall(Carder 80), Steadman, Parker, North, Buckley(Bonnick 65), Fowkes(Jenas 67)

In this local derby the surprising statistic was the nine bookings handed out by the referee (7 Sports, 2 Long Eaton) in a game which was hard fought but hardly a bad tackle all afternoon.

The Blues dominated the first half but could not turn their good work into goals. The best chance of the half fell to Channon North but his powerful drive was turned round the post by keeper Danny Tollerfield. Alex Steadman was proving a hand full for the visitors and he went close with a volley before Sports had their only worthwhile attempt on goal of the half, but Mark Blounts header from a Paul Wraith free kick sailed wide.

Channon North had the ball in the net but was ruled off side but for all their pressure the Blues could not break down the Sports defence, marshalled well by captain Mark Blount.

HALF TIME LONG EATON 0 MICKLEOVER SPORTS 0

Sports came more into the game in the second half but it was the Blues who looked the most likely to score. On 67 minutes Channon North had a header cleared off the line by Tom Betteridge before on 70 minutes Adam Newton broke the deadlock with a half volley through a crowded goalmouth after keeper Tollerfield had cleared the ball under pressure from a Matt McCall corner. Substitute Rian Jenas volleyed over before Sports got back on level terms through David Holmes, who scored direct from a corner, the ball eluding everyone and went in off the far post. On 84 minutes Tollerfield did well to tip over a Coutney Bonnick header and then the Blues hit the bar with a James Carder free kick Sports almost snatched victory through Colin Hoyle, but his goal bound shot was brilliantly turned round the post by keeper Wayne White.

Jim's X1 V the Ladies

Wednesday night (6/02/2008) provided a very entertaining match between some coffin dodges and the ladies. The old gits started well passing the ball around making the Ladies chase shadow's. it took 8 minutes for the first set of leggs to give in but by that time the men where up by 1. By half time 60 faggs had been coughed up and the men where 2-0 up a disgruntled ladies captain led the ladies back to the changing rooms whilst the old gitts took some water on and emptied 3 oxygen bottles. The second half saw the ladies being a bit more aggressive treading on toes etc, they presssed forward and veggy had to get his knees dirty to keep his clean sheet, this allowed the old gits some space behind the Ladies and they extended there lead 3-0.

Final Score 4 - 0
