Eccleshill V Long Eaton United 15/03/2008
On a greasy pitch due to heavy rain, the Blues were looking to redeem themselves after their midweek defeat against in form Brodsworth. They deservedly took the lead on 13 min when Alex Steadman coolly beat his marker after being put through by Channon North and fired a low shot across keeper Carl Zaborowski into the corner of the net.

The keeper had earlier denied Paul McGinty with a good save deflecting the ball wide after a good run from the full back. The football from the Blues was excellent on the tricky surface and it seemed only a matter of time before they increased their lead, but with a combination of good goal keeping, dogged defending and a large slice of luck the home side held out to the break. Zaborowski was outstanding, denying Steadman with an acrobatic save just before the interval after his shot was deflected and such was the superiority of the Blues

Ecclesill’s first worthwhile shot on goal was in the 44th minute when White saved well from Andy Howland. The centre back pairing of teenagers Josh Watts and Danny Chambers was outstanding with Matt McCall and Marc Stryzewski controlling the midfield.

Half Time Eccleshill 0 Long Eaton 1

The second period continued with the Blues on top with Channon North heading a McCall corner over. The home side had their best chance, but Ross Haywood , in space ,dragged his shot woefully wide, with only keeper White to beat. The Blues went further ahead on 61min when Michael Buckley won the ball on the halfway line and released Channon North with an astute pass and the big centre forward rounded the keeper and fired into a empty net. Eccleshill replied , with a deflected shot by Ben Hardy superbly tipped away by Wayne White , and then White had to be at his best holding a fierce John Lamb shot at the base of the post. The Blues made three substitutions in the last quarter and controlled the game well until the final whistle

FINAL SCORE Eccleshill 0 Long Eaton 1

A good result for the Blues, answering the critics who only seem available with their comments when things go wrong. All credit must go to the management duo who put so much time and effort into the club.

Corby v Long Eaton United Ladies 9/03/2008
Long Eaton United Ladies Long Eaton United Ladies travelled to Corby for a top of the table clash and suffered a 1 nil defeat which sent Corby to the top with a 1 point lead over Long Eaton.

Corby started brighter and it was Cairo Hopewell who kept Long Eaton in the game with some good saves. This was mainly a half of few chances with both midfields equalling each other out. It was not until 33 minutes with the Long Eaton calling for offside, the Corby forward raced through and fired home.

Long Eaton went in search of an equaliser and had their best spell of the half when carly Hayes hit a screamer from 30 yards and hit the bar.

In the second half neither side created any clear cut chances, neither keeper was test as each side cancelled each other out. Long Eaton now go into next week’s game against Hinckley needing a point to be sure of runners up.

Manager Kevin Hancock said after the match “Corby were a good side and well organised and they deserved to win on the day”

Long Eaton United v Parkgate 8/03/2008
LONG EATON:- White, Chambers, McGinty, Allsop,(McCall60) Watts, Stryzewski, Buckley,Parker, Bonnick,(Downie 62), Steadman(North 62), Fowkes

The Blues welcomed back Graham Fowkes after injury but were without Adam Newton(injured),Danny Chambers deputizing.

With a strong wind blowing across the pitch, Parkgate were the first to show with Johnson having a shot comfortably saved by keeper img_0804.jpgWayne White. The Blues took the lead with their first attack when Alex Steadman was brought down on the edge of the areaby Robert Moorwood, erning himself a booking ,and from the resulting free kick Marc Stryzewski fired in a low shot past the despairing fingers of keeper David Rattcliffe. With the Blues now on top and playing some good football, Ratcliffe saved well from Steadman but on 21 min he could not deny Steadman a second time when the latter latched onto a slide rule pass by Stryzewski to side step the keeper and fire into an empty net to make it 2-0 In the blustery conditions the Blues were playing good football with Mickey Buckley outstanding Parkgate went close with a Gavin Allott header just over before the Blues had penalty appeals turned down by referee Dudley when Steadman was blatantly knocked off the ball in the area by Moorcroft.

HALF TIME LONG EATON 2 PARKGATE 0

The Blues increased their lead In the 47th min with a fine headed goal by Steadman, neatly heading home after a good cross by Buckley. The Blues made a triple substitution, bring on Scott Downie,Channan North and Mat McCall and it was Downie who increased the lead, getting the final touch after a jinking run and shot was only parried by keeper Ratcliffe. There was no let up by the Blues and Buckley was again the provider, with an excellent cross which sub Channon North glancing a header past the outstretched hands of keeper Ratcliffe into the bottom corner to seal an emphatic win and help to bury the dissapointment of last week’s defeat at Glapwell.

Long Eaton United Ladies v Asforby 2-03-2008
Long Eaton United Ladies entertained Asforby this weekend and after a run of poor results Long Eaton went behind after 18 minutes. Long Eaton came back into the game and started to play better football and equalised on 25 minutes when Jodie Hancock burst through from midfield and scored with a great right footed chip.

Long Eaton was beginning to take charge in midfield with Armstrong, Jones and Hancock winning every tackle. On 33 minutes Sarah Harrison ran onto a Chloe Maddan through ball and knocked the ball past the Asforby keeper.

The second half was a scrappy affair with neither side looking like scoring, but on 75 minutes Long Eaton put together a good move featuring Hancock and Harrison who setup Marie Walker for her first goal for the club. Long Eaton could have scored more towards the end except for good defending by Asforby.

Manager Kevin Hancock said “We were still not at our best, but with a change of formation seemed to work and the whole side put in plenty of effort, which has been missing in previous weeks. We travel to Corby next week which could decided the league title”

Glapwell v Long Eaton United 1/03/2008

The Blues had Marc Stryzewski back from suspension but were without Michael Buckley and Channon North through work commitments. The Blues served up some shambolic defending to hand their high flying opponents a flattering 5-2 win on a blustery afternoon.

mic1.jpgThe Blues had the advantage of the strong wind in their favour but it was the home side who were the first to threaten. After only 3 min the Blues defence were almost caught out but got away with it but they weren’t so lucky in the next minute when hesitancy by Josh Watts and Micky Allsop let in Jez Mitchell who fired past Wayne White from close range.

On 7 min Allsop had a header cleared off the line before Glapwell rode their luck when a Parker shot was deflected off a defender just round the post ,with keeper West beaten. On 16 minutes Ian Brown easily outpaced Adam Newton down the left flank but was then brought down with a rash tackle by Josh Watts for a penalty, Matt Varley sending Wayne White thelostit.jpg wrong way to put the home side 2-0 up.

The Blues were still in the game with Glapwell relying on quick breaks, and it was Nathan Parker who tested keeper West from the edge of the area, turning a fierce shot round the post at full stretch. On 36 min Brown again outstripped Adam Newton down the left and under pressure from Micky Allsop managed to squeeze the ball across the goal for Jez Mitchell to net at the far post. On 43 min White made an outstanding save from Michael Fox , turning his powerful shot over the bar. In the final minute of the half the Blues pulled one back with the best goal of the game. Alex Steadman picked the ball up on the edge of his own area and ran on, releasing the ball inside to Scott Downie who in turn laid the ball into the path of Nathan Parker who scored with a powerful rising drive.

HALF TIME GLAPWELL 3 LONG EATON 1

With the Blues now facing the wind, they took the game to the home side and young Rian Jenas worked his way into the box ,but chose to pass to Scott Downie when a shot was on and the chance went begging. The Blues looked the more likely to score with Steadman having a fine volley on the turn just over. Against the run of play,Glapwll went further ahead when Michael Fox found himself unmarked and fired a shot low past keeper White from 12 yards out.

The Blues still forced the pace and keeper West did well to save from Scott Downie and then made a fine double save to deny Courtney Bonnick and Alex Steadman. On 90 min Steadman was fouled in the area and Mat McCall made no mistake from the spot but from the restart Josh Watts inexcusably lost possession to Mark Nangle who ran on and fired past the stranded Wayne White to confirm the Blues misery.

FULL TIME GLAPWELL 5 LONG EATON 2 The Blues defence had a nightmare, with the normally assured trio of Adam Newton, Josh Watts and Micky Allsop all having off days to end their 7 match unbeaten run.

Long Eaton United Ladies v Welbeck 24/02/2008
Long Eaton Ladies travelled to Welbeck in their quarter finales cup tie and soon found themselves a gaol down due to poor defending. Long Eaton got back into the game and equalised when a Sarah Harrison cross was hammered home by Jodie Hancock.

Long Eaton never really got to grips in midfield allowing Welbeck to create chance after chance and just before half time a Welbeck winger got in behind the defence and the resulting cross was not cleared by a hesitant defence allowing a Welbeck forward to tap in.

Long Eaton started the second half more positively, passing the ball round and causing the welbeck defence problems, but without causing the Welbeck keeper any.

With 15 minutes to go Welbeck went 3 – 1 up, then a Welbeck forward was brought down in the box by Chloe Maddan and scored from the resulting spot kick. Long Eaton pushed forward in an attempt to selvage the game, but in doing so, left gaps in the rear which was exploited by the Welbeck forwards, who scored 3 more goals in the last 5 minutes.

Kevin Hancock said after the match “we punched above our weight this season and certain players inadequacies are now being found out. Players not turning up and letting us down is not helping. We have got to get our heads down for the last 3 games of the season to aim for promotion”
