Long Eaton travelled to Hinkley Downes who groundshare with Hinkley Utd in a magnificent new staduium worthy of football league status
The Blues should have gone ahead in the first minute when Danny Beldham was put through by Micky Allsop but his fierce shot just grazed the top of the bar. Hikley replied with some outstanding football and tested goalkeeper Steve Smith on three occasions before he was finally beaten on 28 min with a goal by Ben Laxton who shot into the bottom corner of the net after good work by the lively Rich Gunderlach.
The home side were well on top with only a Alex Steadman shot being turned round the post by keeper Sam Knott the only reply. The home side should have gone 2-0 up but Gunderlach was thwarted by an excellent save to keep the Blues in the game
In a much improved second half, the Blues began to dominate the play with substitute David Wilkinson getting into the game well and the dangerous Gunderlach being marked tighter, it ws the home keeper who was now the busier. Keeper Sam Knott did well to keep his side in the game with outstanding saves from Allsop(twice) Alex Steadman and Danny Beldham before he was finall beaten on 88min with a stunning shot from David Wilkinson which flew into the top corner of the net to take the game into extra time.
In the first period of extra time Steve Smith did well to save from Ben Keeley but was beaten on 104 min when Chris Bradshaw was allowed to run through unchallenged and bury his shot into the bottom corner of the net
The Blues fought back in the second period and were rewarded when Marc Stryzewski headed the ball back into the box and Alex Steadman was on hand to volley the ball into thr roof of the net.
The tie looked as if it was ging back to Grange Park for a replay but with the last kick of the match super sub David Wilkinson rifled a shot past keeper Knott after good work by Ian Buick to take them into the next round.
An excellant result from a very entertaining cuptie with neither side deserving to lose.
The hospitality by the Hinkley club was first class and every body from Long Eaton wish them well with these magnificant facilities
