LONG EATON: - Smith, Newton, McGinty, Allsop, Stryzewski, McCall, Beldham (65), Holmes, Parker, Downie, Steadman, Fowkes (subs) Chambers, Weston
The Blues welcomed back Mickey Allsop from injury and he took the place of Josh Watts who was suspended.
The Blues took the game to Liversedge , the present league leaders, with Alez Steadman having a shot saved by keeper Lee Ahforth and Scott Downie firing over in the first two minutes. It was relentless pressure from the Blues, playing good and positive football with Mickey Allsop next going close with a header from an Adam Holmes corner. Keeper Ashforth was having a inspired game making three outstanding saves to deny Graham Fowkes wth a header, Alex Steadman with as shot and finally just before the break with a point blank save from Mat McCall.
The visitors had only threatened the Blues goal once in the first half but a Chris Wood’s header from a Dan Cooper cross went narrowly wide on 42 min. This was by far the best 45 minutes of the season from the Blues and with chances created would not have been flattered to go in at the break four goals in front.
The second half saw the visitors making more of a game of it but Allsop and Stryzewski were outstanding at the heart of the Blues defence. Allsop shot wide on 66 min and ten Ashforth continued his heroics, denying Steadman once more at the near post after he had been set up by the excellant Adam Holmes. Danny Beldham came on for Mat McCall and he was soon in the thick of things and it was he who finally put the Blues deservedly ahead. Holmes, Downie and Steadman worked their way into the area and the ball broke to Beldham on the edge of the box and he rifled a low shot into the bottom corner of the net past the stranded Ashforth.
This proved to be the inner and it had to be something special to beat the superb visiting keeper. All credit to the Blues who seem to have settled in the last few games and with performances like this should soon be climbing into the top reaches of the league.
