The Blues Academy players travelled to top of the table and shield opponents, Mickleover Sports on Thursday evening. Despite the squad missing Captain Josh Watts, Vice Captain Lynton Francis, Joe Steed, Gareth Northover, Ashley Foster and long term injured Luke Britland, the boys still manage to put on a good performance against a very talented side. Mickleover had the first two chances, but their strikers failed to trouble Long Eaton stopper, Whelehan. From then on Long Eaton got into their stride and the Blues players had the home team chasing all over the pitch as they passed the ball fluently and comfortably from back to front. One particular move, which began with keeper Whelehan, saw the all of the Blue’s players involved, but they could not breech the home defence. Blue’s Skipper on the night Danny Chambers came closest to breaking the deadlock. First he rose the highest to get on the end of a Booth corner , but couldn’t get enough on it to beat the Mickleover Keeper and it was a similar result a few minutes later as Chambers got on the end of a Booth free-kick.

The second half saw pretty much the same, a hard fought contest which Long Eaton just about shaded, but they failed to present any of their strikers with an appropriate pass at the right time. Long Eaton’s central defenders Preston and Kilbourne coped with a lively home attack aide by the impressive Roome and Man of the match Darryl Hawkins. Midfielders Gleave and Ndricim {Totti} worked tirelessly for the cause, but it was a nearly night for them as far as their creativity was concerned. Wide men Mulonga and Whieldon were starved of any real quality possession and it was the same for strikers Booth and Chambers. Long Eaton welcomed Reiss Lindsay back as a second half substitute and he looked sharp. Sam Hawkins and Brett Hayes the remaining Blues subs, also looked energetic and both had chancees to snatch the victory for long Eaton , but were both denied.

Long Eaton manager Leigh Booth was full of praise for his team’s efforts. “If we can just have a little more quality with our final ball, then we can turn these draws into wins!” He stated. Our last two matches have been away against the top two in the Division and we could and probably should have won both. The boys have worked hard and the improvement is there for all to see. If we can continue with the improvement until the end of the season, then we can be pleased with our first attempt in this league.
